The man who never fails to amaze us, Zorawar Kalra of Massive Group has opened South Bombay’s (almost) biggest and first freestyle bar- Kode in Kamala Mills. Kalra is known for thinking out of the box and going an extra mile to create magic on the face of earth in the form of his restaurants. After Pa Pa Ya, Farzi Cafe and Masala Library; Kode is all set to take you on a different pedestal in the field of hospitality.
This place has more than 150 brands of whisky from all over the world and some thought provoking drinks that not only have all the right mixes but also has a story behind it. Each course is paired with a cocktail that accentuates the palate and you’ll be left wondering. Chef Saurav has taken the command of this one of its kind bar for next few months and he makes sure that each dish is no less than perfect.
The cuisine is a synthesis of culinary innovation and exploration of over three continents, featuring hand-picked delicacies from around the world, giving each dish a unique modern twist. So, the next time you’re itching to break away from dal-chawal monotony, make modern cuisine your jam because Zorawar is very particular about making sure you get to ‘chill’ after work hours. Here, bartenders are called ‘liquid chefs’ who will showcase a different range of innovative cocktails with complex compositions.
What we ate…
We decided to let chef Saurav take the charge for the night and send what he thinks is best for us. The night was started with Bloody Mary– An illusion of texture, deconstruction of flavors with 3 course cocktail from the Liquid Chef of KODE. The Macaroon was lighter than air and the Bloody Mary was spiked right for it. Post the scintillating cocktail came the Togarishi and Garlic Olives Chives Creme Fraiche– Kalamata olives marinated with Japanese red chilli and roasted garlic, served with sour cream and chopped chives. We wiped up the plate in no time! Next was Herb Crusted Scotch Eggs baby Greens, they were the best scotch eggs I had ever tried. After some mind-boggling Kale salad, Avocado Carpaccio, Rock Shrimp Tempura came main course. 18 hours cooked Lamb Shanks were the show stopper. The meat went down the gullet so swiftly that for a moment I thought “Was that really meat?”.
Other than the Bloody Mary what else one should try? Forgotten Petal Sour and Bird’s Eye. While the the former is- A symbol of happiness, love, anger, this gin based cocktail with in-house mix of rose and berries symbolizes what’s your mood for the day. There many reason for people to come to a bar to Drink and this Cocktail just fixes the mood for the day; Latter is- Inspired from cracked egg in the nest which gives a new life, a berry shrub cocktail gives you the wings to fly in the scented cinnamon air.
Any meal is incomplete without the last and in my case the most important course- Desserts. Chef sent us two beautiful desserts namely, Vanilla Bean Panna Cota with Seasonal Fruits- Sugar free preparation where is mouse is set and flavoured with vanilla beans and served along fresh seasonal berries & Black Forest Maraschino Cherries- Reconstruction of black forest gateux wherein chocolate ganash, cherry cream and rich sponge are served in different form.
With experimental 3 course cocktails and a twist to the signature dishes and desserts, Kode is going be everyone’s favorite destination for fine-dining.
